(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Delays in FAFSA – or, the Free Application for Federal Student Aid -- mean that some local universities are pushing back their deadlines.
The University of Illinois-Chicago is now giving incoming freshmen until June 1 to commit and accept admission. The school announced the later date after learning it will not receive FAFSA information from the U.S. Department of Education until mid-March.
As a result, UIC will have to push back when it can send out offers of financial aid to families to early May.
Loyola acknowledges the delay and says it does not yet know when it will send out award information, but the university is encouraging students to fill out the application as soon as possible.
There is good news for some: The delays are due to an overhaul of FAFSA forms, and students will no longer have to disclose if they’re getting financial help from their grandparents in paying for college.
