There are new calls for state leaders to take action against the owners of a South Deering funeral home, where more than 50 bodies were found in “deplorable conditions” last month.

Lisette Guillen with Case Files Chicago speaking to reporters after a meeting with Comptroller Susana Mendoza, as well as families of loved ones whose remains were found improperly stored in the basement, closets, even bathrooms of the South Chicago Chapel.
“Ms. Mendoza feels strongly, along with us, that this absolutely deserves criminal attention. This case needs criminal charges.”
The Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation, which oversees funeral home directors, has suspended the license of Johanna Morgan, who co-owns the South Chicago Chapel with her husband, Clark Morgan.
Now, there’s a push to have that license permanently revoked, and for lawmakers to overall funeral home oversight.
