CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Leaders of the South Shore rail commuter line are another step closer to completing a long-awaited project to add a second set of tracks between Gary and Michigan City where there's currently only a single track.

The Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District board, which runs the South Shore, as approved a nearly $305-million contract to build the second track.

The South Shore’s Nicole Barker, one of the project's leaders, said the second track will bring many improvements.

"Motivation for the project? To go faster, have more trains, to be safer, have more travel options and then there's a whole range of intendant economic benefits for the local economies and the state economy," Barker told WBBM Newsradio.

The project also includes improvements to stations along the route, including greater accessibility and expanded parking. The project is scheduled for completion in 2024.
