(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — There were some uplifting moments Friday for a Ukrainian Catholic school on the near Northwest Side as they got a visit and a performance from a South Side high school choir.
After saying the pledge of allegiance and the national anthem, students at St. Nicholas Cathedral School sang Ukraine’s national anthem before being treated to a performance from Leo High School’s boys choir.
“I explained to them the plight in which the students are here and that they have family members back home,” Leo Principal Shaka Rawls said. “Some recent students have come over from Ukraine recently because of the war and we want to bring them some peace. And, once they understand what we’re doing here, they’re locked into the mission.”
Rawls added: “Coming from the South Side of Chicago, we understand what it means to deal with oppression, to deal with other forces that are outside of your control. And so, it resonates with my students quite well.”
Leo High School senior Jamari Allen, choir leader for the performance, said he was happy to perform for the students.
“I hope we put a smile on their face and help them for the future, and I wish the best for them and their families,” Allen said.
