CHICAGO HEIGHTS, IL (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - There was another gas giveaway, this one in Bloom Township in the south suburbs, drew a long line of seniors Tuesday.
The line of seniors waiting in their cars for the $50 gas cards stretched for about three miles at one point along Halsted Street in Chicago Heights at the township offices.
Annette Fears said the long wait was no problem. She called it “an awesome humanitarian act.”
Bloom Trustee Cheryl Franklin could not believe the turn out.
“We knew they were coming out, I didn’t know they were coming out like this,” Franklin said.
But Franklin added they were glad to meet the needs of their residents.
“We did a quick turnaround on this, once they realized that there was a need that we needed to fill. So, we said, ‘let’s fill it, quick,’” Bloom Township Administrator Leticia Johnson said.
The township trustees set aside $50,000 for the event and you had to be 65 or older and live in the township to receive a card.
