CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The Special Olympics, which started in Chicago 55 years ago, is hosting what’s being called the Golden Games Tuesday and Wednesday.
About 150 athletes between the ages of 45- 74 are taking part in the first-ever Golden Games, said Mary Slowik with Special Olympics Charities.
"This is such a wonderful celebration of Chicago's strong history with the games and we hope to make this an annual event," she added.
Two of the athletes participating in the games were in the first-ever Special Olympics in 1968 at Soldier Field.
Amelia Hernandez is one of them. She was 11 then and said she still loves competing. Hernandez also said she enjoys many different sports such as hockey, volleyball, bowling, basketball and soccer.
"I feel really good and competitive. I never quit. I still come and join the fun."
