A Springfield police officer has been placed on unpaid leave after allegedly posting various kinds of hate speech on social media.
The posts attributed to the 15-year veteran officer reportedly exposed by an anonymous person are alleged to include comments that are seen as racist, homophobic and anti-Semitic.
Police Chief Ken Scarlette wrote, “Serious allegations that will be investigated thoroughly.”
Sunshine Clemmons of Black Lives Matter-Springfield spoke to CBS 3 in Champaign.
"Having real conversations with the officers that you have on your force about this behavior, why it's not acceptable, and not just saying, 'This is why you shouldn't use social media,'" Clemmons said.
Mayor Jim Langfelder called the posts “alarming.”
He said, “Springfield is a city of inclusion, tolerance and respect for all.”
