ST. CHARLES, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A west suburban school board member resigned Tuesday after saying she could no longer take the harassment she was being subjected to.

Carolyn Waibel stepped down from the St. Charles District 303 school board saying she has been harassed on social media, through emails and at her home for about a dozen years. She’s been on the school board for the last four years.

“There’s been a finite group of people on social media, who have accused me, been mean to me, said my name everyday for the last 365 days of the year on social media”, Waibel said addressing school board members during the most recent meeting.

“I feel threatened. If this was only it, I wouldn’t be scared.”

Waibel said that someone harassed her when she using a walker and that she had dead animals thrown on her driveway. She also stated that she was followed and video-taped while she was shopping with her son in a grocery store, had her car vandalized, and her home broken into.

Waibel said other school boards have protected their members when harassment occurs yet District 303 has not.

“There are other boards in this state that have the courage to take care of its own people,” she said. “This board is not one of them. I’m ashamed to be on it.”

Waibel is the second St. Charles District 303 school board member to resign this year after Michael Bryant. The Kane County Chronicle reported that he stepped down from the board in January due to personal reasons as stated in his resignation letter.

The school board is now accepting applications from community members. Those interested in serving on the board are being asked to submit a resume and a letter of interest in by Oct. 25.
