West suburban St. Charles has started to survey residents for signs of possible lead risks in their drinking water.
The city said there's no lead in the source of the city's drinking water supply nor in water coming from water mains. The surveys are required under the Illinois Lead Service Line Replacement and Notification Act.
Residents will receive a letter in the mail when their neighborhood is being surveyed, according to St. Charles officials.
The survey itself will be done online. It will include instructions on how to identify whether the water pipes leading into a home are lined with lead.
St. Charles residents will be asked to identify the materials used for their water service lines, as the city said it lacks any records on the matter.
Lead was commonly used in water service lines and home plumbing since before the mid-1950s. It was not banned until 1986.
