A member of Libertyville’s St. Lawrence Episcopal Church has anonymously donated $1 million, which means church leaders won’t be forced to sell their building.

St. Lawrence, located in downtown Libertyville, has faced financial challenges ever since church leadership took out a mortgage to build a new sanctuary.

Deborah DeManno, a warden at St. Lawrence, said eventually the church was spending most of the money it raised on mortgage payments.

“The mortgage was really prohibiting us from doing our ministry,” DeManno said, “Because all of our money raised was going to pay the mortgage debt.”

She says leaders of St. Lawrence decided the best option was to sell the church to pay the mortgage, until a member offered to give the church $1 million.

“The person is a member of the church but wants to remain anonymous,” DeManno said. “[They] felt strongly that it would be really detrimental if we had to leave the building.”

DeManno says in addition to keeping the church building, St. Lawrence now has the financial freedom it needs to serve its members and the community.
