PALATINE (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - A northwest suburban Catholic school will be shutting for good this spring after decades of educating elementary school children.

Sixty-four years after opening its doors, St. Thomas of Villanova Catholic School in Palatine will be closing at the end of this academic year.

Father Kris Janczak, pastor of St. Thomas Church, said everything was done to try to keep it open, including having solid fundraising efforts.

But, he said enrollment still went down 17 percent, and the school’s projected deficit has become insurmountable.

There are 145 students currently enrolled at St. Thomas of Villanova School.

The pastor said the school will help students find other Catholic schools, and that teachers and staff will receive priority for positions within the Archdiocese of Chicago.
