(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Illinois state police say advanced technology that drivers see every day helped them track down a suspect in a road-rage shooting in the south suburbs.

A lane change led to a dispute Monday night on northbound I-57 near 147th Street between Jalynn L. Powell of Chicago and the driver of another vehicle, State Police Capt. David Keltner said.

He said Powell, 21, fired at the other vehicle, damaging it but not wounding anyone, before continuing north on the expressway.

Troopers used License Plate Reader technology to track Powell's vehicle, Keltner said. Police entered that into an LPR system.

Troopers later located Powell's vehicle on the Dan Ryan Expressway near 79th Street and followed it to Dorchester Avenue in Dolton, where Powell was arrested.
