(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – Illinois State Police say troopers made a historic drug bust in west central Illinois this week when authorities recovered more than 5,200 pounds of cannabis.
A state trooper on Wednesday evening pulled over a Provost Bus on eastbound Interstate 80 in Henry County, officials said, and "numerous indicators of criminal activity were observed."
A K-9 unit detected narcotics, and the resulting search yielded the discovery of 5,231 pounds of illegal cannabis that was in packages throughout the vehicle, state police said.
The street value of the drugs was between $6 million and $15 million, say authorities, who called the seizure "one of the largest in ISP history."
Arrested were two men from Lancaster, California: 29-year-old Robert Mazo and 33-year-old Pedro Arreola. They were charged with cannabis trafficking, a Class X felony, among other offenses, state police said.
