(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A little holiday tip from law enforcement. If you're celebrating the season by covering your vehicle with festive lights, there may be a citation under the tree.

Sergeant Melissa Albert-Lopez of the Illinois State police says it's against the law to cover a vehicle with holiday lights and turn them on while driving.

Not trying to be a grinch, it's the holiday season. I get it. It looks cool but it is very illegal to drive with Christmas lights around your vehicle."

She says there's a good reason why.

"It really just comes down to safety. It is distracting when you see a vehicle driving next to you with flashing Christmas lights, and distractions lead to crashes, and crashes cause people to get hurt. And that's what we're really trying to avoid."

Police in Illinois and Indiana have warned drivers that if they turn their vehicles into rolling holiday light displays, they could face tickets and hefty fines.
