SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Illinois Republicans said even without Mike Madigan as Speaker of the House, Democrats stuck to their old ways in drawing legislative maps.

There's one chance fairness will prevail, said state Sen. Jason Barickman, a top Republican on the Illinois Senate Redistricting Committee.

"Gov. Pritzker promised voters, when he was a candidate for office, that he'd veto any map drawn by politicians. And so the governor has a unique opportunity to not only do what's right here, but to uphold the promise that he made to voters. He has a chance not to become the hypocrite that so many before him have become," Barickman told WBBM Newsradio.

Democrats said the proposal reflects the state's diversity.

But Change Illinois said the proposal leaves out lots of input from minorities and relies on estimates that undercut Illinois by more than 40,000 people.

Hearings on the maps will take place during the upcoming final week of the General Assembly session.
