State returns nearly $276M in unclaimed property to its rightful owners

(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The state of Illinois returned hundreds of millions of dollars in once unclaimed money to its rightful owners last year.

I-CASH is the state's "missing money" program. The Illinois State Treasurer's Office says last year, it processed more than 314,000 claims, resulting in nearly $276 million being returned to its rightful owners.

The money comes from unclaimed property that's found in safe deposit boxes or from forgotten bank accounts and unpaid life insurance benefits.

The state treasurer is tasked with safeguarding that money until its rightful owners are found.

People can see if the state is holding money for them or anyone they know by going to icash.illinoistreasurer.gov.
