(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A statue of a Union soldier has returned to its place of honor above downtown Aurora’s Grand Army of the Republic Hall in time for Veterans’ Day.
The sentry adorned the top of the building when it opened in the late 1870s, but by the time it was removed in 2008, it was crumbling and in need of restoration.
A replacement sentry has been built with materials that will better withstand the weather. That’s the one that will stand on the roof of the Grand Army of the Republic Museum and Hall.
The original sentry statue, which was restored, will be on display inside the museum.
Contracts for both statues were paid out of a restoration grant the city of Aurora received from the state.
The unveiling of the new sentry statue will take place during tomorrow’s Veterans Day ceremony in Aurora.
Aurora’s Veterans Day Parade will have a theme of “Service to Our Country, Service to Our Community.”
