(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Former Chicago Bears great Steve “Mongo” McMichael will not be making the trip to Canton, Ohio, for his induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame this summer.

Spokesperson Betsy Shepherd said in a statement that McMichael won’t be making the trip “due to complications of ALS.”

He learned in February he was getting the honor. His sister, Kathy, spoke to the media at the time.

“We’ve waited for this for a very long time,” she said. “It’s amazing that he gets to be a part of it. That’s all we wanted, for him to know that he was going to be in the Hall of Fame.”

McMichael was diagnosed with ALS in 2021. Thirty-six years earlier, he was on the ’85 Bears Super Bowl team. He played for the Bears from 1981 – 1993.

Over his career, McMichael ranks second all-time in franchise history in sacks, with 92.5, and third in tackles with 814.

The Pro Football Hall of Fame is now making plans for presenting the honor at his home.
