VILLA PARK (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - It’s a busy and emotional weekend for both the customers and owner of Strat’s, a popular drive-thru restaurant in the western suburbs.

Strat Matsas knows his customers by first name. He’s the grill on the final weekend of his namesake, Strats Drive-Thru in Villa Park.

The parking lot was filled Friday, and there has been what he describes as an overwhelming outpouring of support.

“This is nothing,” Matsas said. “Last night was stupid crazy, and this weekend, I’m scared. I’m telling you, I’m scared.

In the kitchen, with a spatula and tongs in hand, he told WBBM it’s just time to retire, and  he’s very proud he was able to create something meaningful.

“I’m 61 now. I got no diabetes, no cancer, no heart attack yet. I said, ‘I want to go out on top.’ I’m not going to go out when I’m sick with cancer, I got diabetes, and I can’t work like I can. I’m physically fit, ready to go. I’m just going to go out on top, enjoy my day,” said Matsas.

The memorabilia-filled restaurant is known for its ribeye steak sandwich and has long served as a hub for car shows and enthusiasts.

Strat’s will permanently close after the weekend.
