(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A 16-year-old Glenbard East High School student has been charged with making a threat after a teacher found a drawing the teen allegedly made showing the aftermath of a fictional, deadly knife attack at the school.
The unnamed student allegedly placed the drawing in the teacher’s filing cabinet earlier this week, DuPage County authorities said. Addressed to the teacher, the drawing depicted a character holding a bloody knife as blood seeped out of classrooms. The caption to the drawing said “school stabber at Glenbard East 120 dead,” according to prosecutors.
“Any threat to the well-being of our students, teachers and school personnel will be taken very seriously,” State’s Attorney Robert Berlin said in a news release. “Students have got to understand that school threats are no joking matter and can have a chilling effect not just on students, teachers and staff, but also on parents, siblings and the entire community.”
Police took the teen into custody Wednesday, and he appeared Thursday at a court hearing. A judge placed him in the custody of his mother, on “home detention lockdown.” He faces one count of disorderly conduct/threat to a school, a Class 4 felony.
“Teachers can’t teach, and students can’t learn if they instead are concerned about their own personal safety,” Lombard Chief of Police Roy Newton said. “We must do all we can to ensure that our schools remain free from violence and threats of violence.”
