
RICHMOND, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) --Students at a high school northwest of Chicago say photos of them were altered by artificial intelligence and made sexually explicit.
Police in Richmond, Illinois and McHenry County have launched an investigation after students at Richmond Burton community High school allege their innocent photos were turned into sexually explicit images using AI.
Sophomore, Stevie Hyder claims her photo taken before a school dance was turned into a nude photo. She told CBS 2 she never imagined the happy moment would be used against her.
“We all feel extremely violated. Actually, after I saw my photo personally, I felt so nauseous.”
V.S. Subrahmanian, a computer science professor at Northwestern University told CBS 2 that individuals using AI for these type of things is "very dangerous."
"If you are one of the people who is depicted in this way, it's very freighting - and getting rid of these kinds of content is very difficult."
Richmond police are now investigating along with the McHenry County Sheriff's Department. The school principal told Hyder's mother, that she is number 22 on the list of those affected.
