(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The St. Charles City Council supports changing a state law to allow police departments to use drones for surveillance at community events.
Proponents say the idea is to prevent tragedies like the mass shooting last year at the Highland Park Fourth of July.
Currently, drones can only be used only after a crime has been committed.
If an event is on private property, use of a drone must be authorized by the owners or organizers before flight.
