A northwest suburban animal shelter is in the process of wrapping up a major renovation project.
The $1.2 million expansion project at Barb's Precious Rescue and Adoption Center on Quentin Road in Palatine will triple the amount of space to shelter cats and dogs.
Barb Weber, a hospital administrator, initially cared for stray cats in her home. The practice expanded when she and her husband purchased an old farmhouse in 2013 and turned it into an animal shelter.
Construction on the expanded cat space is complete. When it opens, Weber said the new shelter will be able to house 300 cats.
"Our building is 100% cat space. We have one office," she said. "The entire building is for the cats. And laundry rooms, you definitely need those."
The expanded cat facilities will allow the shelter to accommodate large numbers of cats that come in from emergencies, such as hoarding situations.
Shelter space for dogs is under construction. Weber said that should open next year.
