(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Looking for a unique set of wheels? A south suburban fire department has got a deal for you.
The Palos Fire Protection District is auctioning off a 17-year-old ambulance with more than 91,000 miles on it and some oil leaks. The owners say it’s the perfect vehicle to customize for road trips, given all of the space.
“I’m kind of a minimalist. I mean, I would do just a bed. I kind of like the great outdoors. Just put a nice little place to sleep and you have your climate control in the back so you’d be able to have your AC and your heat if you need to,” says Will Stukel, battalion chief.
Bidding currently is at $5,200, and it’s hoped the ambulance can bring in at least $10,000. A lot of the proceeds will be earmarked for equipment for the district’s dive and rescue unit.
The ambulance lights and air horns are part of the deal. Stukel says private citizens could use the horns.
“But for the lights and sirens, no. That’d be a no-go. You’d definitely get a big ticket for that.”
The online auction ends Tuesday morning.
