(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Police broke up a large gathering in South Elgin last weekend that attracted hundreds of cars.
South Elgin police found between 500 and 600 vehicles in a strip mall parking lot near Randall and Stearns roads around 8:30 p.m. Saturday night.
Officers went there after someone called 9-1-1 about possible gunshots and drag-racing.
Police said the gunshot sounds likely were from modified exhaust systems. Officers did see a few vehicles “driving recklessly.”
Due to the size of the crowd, South Elgin police received assistance from other police agencies. Most people complied with orders to leave the parking lot, but some people threw items at squad cars and tried to climb on them.
There were no reports of injuries, damage or arrests.
