CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Two people are dead and an off-duty Chicago Police detective was wounded in an incident in Portage Park Tuesday.

Shortly before 2:30 p.m., police said an off-duty detective saw a man stab a woman near Central and Leland. The detective shot at the man and suffered a graze wound.

The 54-year-old woman died at the scene, and the detective went to the hospital.

His neighbors spoke with CBS News Chicago.

“It’s just horrible, it’s just such a shame that someone would lose their life, and someone else who was trying to help would be caught in the crossfire there,” a female neighbor said.

“I thought that something like this would never happen in this neighborhood,” neighbor Daniel Potoczny said.

The Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA) is investigating.

Hours later, police said the suspect was found dead in a car nearby.

The Chicago Sun-Times reported the 57-year-old man had been charged last month with trying to choke and kidnap the victim, his estranged wife, but was released on electronic monitoring. That attack came the same day she got an emergency order of protection against him.

The paper said it was the second one she sought this year.
