(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A suspect in the homicide of a Chicago teacher has now been charged with the attempted murder of an Illinois State Trooper in Springfield earlier this week.

Cristobal Santana, 37, was wanted by the Chicago Police Department in connection with the murder of his ex-girlfriend, 37-year-old Adrianna Lopez, last Sunday.

She was shot in a car near her home in the Garfield Ridge neighborhood on Sunday night. She was taken to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where she was pronounced dead, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office.

Days after Lopez' death, Santana was pulled over by a state trooper in Springfield. He's alleged to have shot the trooper in the leg. Authorities said he took off on foot and was caught about three hours later.

Now, Santana's been charged with attempted murder and unlawful use of a weapon.

Lopez had been working as a Chicago Public Schools special education teacher at Nathan S. Davis Elementary School in the Brighton Park neighborhood for about three years, her family said.
