(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Police in northwest suburban Des Plaines say a social-media tip helped them find a man in Mexico charged with the 1999 murder of a United Airlines flight attendant at her apartment.

Police Chief William Kushner on Thursday Luis Rodriguez-Mena fled to Mexico after Young Kavila was killed in a knife attack that nearly decapitated her in November 1999.

The break in the case came in May, Kushner said, when police got a tip on Facebook from someone in Mexico. He says Rodriguez-Mena was found in Mexico and arrested in June, but was only returned to the Chicago area this week because he fought extradition.

Kushner, who is retiring at the end of next week, said he has a good feeling about resolving the case before his departure.

Rodriguez-Mena was expected to appear in Cook County court for a bond hearing Thursday afternoon.
