(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The Highland Park mass shooting suspect appeared in court for the first time in months.
In June, Robert Crimo III rejected a plea deal. He refused to come to court for his first two hearings.
Some contested motions were reviewed in court, including whether Crimo’s former school resource officer can identify him in photos from the crime.
The former school resource officer testified in court, stating that he had several interactions with Crimo.
The second issue was whether Crimo's confession to police is admissible.
The court heard several clips from that alleged confession that appeared to show Crimo declining phone calls or attorneys several times.
The videos shown include clips of Crimo sipping on a soft drink as he is read his Miranda rights. The officer asks if Crimo would like a telephone call, and Crimo said he didn’t need one.
Video also shows the officer asking if Crimo would like to speak to an attorney, to which Crimo said he didn’t need to.
After the hearing Robert Crimo Jr, the suspect's father, briefly told reporters his son was not informed he had an attorney.
Crimo is tentatively set to go on trial in February of 2025.
