CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A 22-year-old man, who was already facing murder charges in a fatal shooting on Interstate 55, has been charged with six more counts of murder connected to a separate, February killing of a man in North Lawndale.
Illinois State Police alleged that Nicholas Samudio committed a road rage shooting on I-55 on Feb. 16, which killed Humberto Marin-Garcia. Chicago police accused Samudio of a second shooting on Feb. 26, which left Tomas Villa dead in North Lawndale.
Samudio, who police said goes by "Smush" on the streets, has been arrested multiple times but has no convictions on his record.
The Sun-Times reported that Villa's death might have been a case of mistaken identity, as he was reportedly wearing a hat that was wrongly associated with a rival gang.
Chicago police said Samudio was arrested while running from a stolen car following that murder, along with Moses Maldonado. State police had already tied Samudio to the first murder.
Now he's charged with both.
A public defender revealed in court that Samudio has Down syndrome.
