CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The union that represents many of the teachers in Illinois is warning of strikes in school districts where concerns about COVID-19 are not adequately addressed.
Illinois Education Association President Kathi Griffin on Wednesday said some school districts have inadequate safety protocols or are not following guidelines from public health officials.
She also accuses some school districts of not giving teachers enough time or support to deal with remote learning. Some are giving into public pressure to return to in-person learning sooner than it would be safe to do so, Griffin said.
Teachers might have no choice but to go on strike if their concerns are not addressed, she said.
The warning comes as the IEA released a survey of its members. One third of respondents said they are considering leaving the profession as a result of the pandemic.
