CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A volunteer group is helping to connect teachers and artists with tons of useful materials that would otherwise end up in a landfill.

Twice a year, Zero Landfill Chicago organizes a big free giveaway of interior design sample materials from stores at the Merchandise Mart.

"We’ve managed to save about a half million pounds of samples from landfills," said Founder Giselle Walsh.

Walsh said the samples include a little bit of everything including draperies, window blinds, wood, glass, samples of tiles, fabric, carpet and wallpaper.

On their own, the samples might not seem like much, but with some creativity, the potential projects are unlimited.

"Super rewarding to see teachers come in and just get stuff that they immediately know how to place in their classroom," Walsh said.

Those interested in the free materials, can pick them this Saturday from 10:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. at Envision Unlimited at 1801 N. Spaulding Ave. in Chicago.
