CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) – A 14-year-old boy who was seriously injured in a shooting that left another teen dead in Douglass Park Thursday evening, is the cousin of Laquan McDonald.
WBBM Newsradio confirmed the relationship with McDonald's grandmother, Tracey Hunter.
The shooting happened around 7 p.m. in the 1400 block of South Sacramento Drive. Police say a 55-year-old Chicago Park District lifeguard with a concealed carry license allegedly opened fire after believing two teens were trying to steal his bicycle.
A 15-year-old boy was shot in the back and later died at the hospital. The 14-year-old boy was shot in the neck and remains hospitalized in serious condition.
The Chicago Park District closed the Douglass Park pool on Friday in the wake of the shooting.
Chicago Police say a suspect is in custody though no charges have been announced.
Area Four detectives are investigating.
