LEMONT (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - A Lemont woman is working to empower young girls through a series of summer camps.
When designing her own lifestyle studio for women and young girls, Massiel Ullsmith said she knew she wanted it to be centered around creativity.
Her vision led to the birth of That Girl + Co.
"We do a lot of creative events, creative classes, we do birthday parties, camps for kids where everything revolves around creativity,” Ullsmith said.
She said the first camp of the summer, which begins next week, is a mini-entrepreneur camp centered around building a lemonade stand.
"We actually walk them through kind of a business plan 101, where they'll get to name their business,” Ullsmith said. “We talk about pricing, we talk about competition, we talk about creating your own recipe and what sets you apart…They go and actually build their lab, it’s a tabletop lemonade stand."
That Girl + Co is also hosting an "I am amazing camp," which is an art camp, and a Taylor Swift camp where the girls will be analyzing the artist's lyrics and discussing her economic and cultural impacts.
We're gonna do some creative projects revolving around Taylor Swift, but we're also going to be talking about her lyrics and how she built what she has built,” said Ullsmith.
She said the goal is to foster empowerment.
"It comes down to me wanting people, whether it's the younger kids or adults, to walk away with the feeling of ‘I can do it,’” Ullsmith said.
