(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Monday was not a typical day in Chicago — nor was it a typical day across a vast stretch of the United States — as the 2024 solar eclipse plunged areas into total or partial darkness.

The Chicago area witnessed about 94% coverage of the sun just a few minutes after 2 p.m. WBBM's reporters were set up across Chicago and in suburban Morton Grove to witness the event.

Some staff also made it to cities places like Indianapolis, which was within the path of totality. Below, we've compiled a collection of images and video from the 2024 total solar eclipse.

Mexico's Pacific coast was the first place in North America to experience totality during Monday's eclipse. From there, the path crossed into Texas and 14 other U.S. states.

It was the continent's biggest eclipse audience ever, with a couple hundred million people living in or near the shadow's path, plus scores of out-of-towners flocking in. Almost everyone in North America was guaranteed at least a partial eclipse, weather permitting.

For more information about the solar eclipse -- including when the next one will take place -- check out WBBM's Solar Eclipse Guide.
