(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – Friday happens to be National Brownie Day, so what better reason to retell the story about its creation in Chicago.
Chicago’s Palmer House hotel lays claim to the chocolatey confection, which was cooked up by the kitchen for the World’s Columbian Exposition of 1893. The idea was to create a moveable treat, says Scott Courley, executive chef of the Palmer House Hilton Hotel.
“They wanted a portable dessert that [you] can have within a box lunch and be out and about. Something other than a cookie.”
Konstantine “Gus” Drosos, general manager of the Palmer House, said the hotel has preserved the recipe for its brownies and faithfully recreates the original here.
“And it is delicious,” he said.
