(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The Christian Youth Theater of Chicago is requiring staff to sign a document embracing “traditional beliefs” — language that some are interpreting as anti-gay.

Theater communities have a long tradition as a refuge for LGBTQ persons. Some people who are active in the Christian Youth Theater of Chicago say they have been pushing the organization’s board to spell out their inclusion of the queer community.

But last week, the board came out with a statement that had the opposite effect. It embraced “traditional beliefs” of sexuality, and staff are expected to sign it.

“It’s not only saying that you cannot be gay or lesbian or identify as queer yourself, but it’s saying that you have to specifically subscribe to a Christian doctrine that is non-queer affirming,” said Will Higgins, who has directed shows.

In other words, Higgins said, even if you’re straight and don’t condemn gay behavior as a sin, you could be removed from the theater organization.

Christian Youth Theater of Chicago says in a statement: ““CYT Chicago was conceived as a unique program to provide theatrical opportunities for families who seek to live in accordance with a traditional view of Scripture. Our Statement of Christian Educational Culture ensures that tradition continues.”
