The Illinois Secretary of State is furious that the Orland Township Board of Trustees voted to cancel a lease for a DMV facility in Orland Park, without input from residents.

Alexi Giannoulias, says the decision is "a huge disservice to residents."

The small office shares space with township offices on Ravinia Avenue.

Trustee Ken Duffy wants it gone. He said people going to the DMV are taking all the parking spots and using township bathrooms.

"They have no washroom facilities," he said. "So, what happens when a customer of the DMV or an employee of the DMV needs to use the washroom, well, they use the township washrooms, and what happens in public washrooms? We all know what happens in public washrooms."

Paul O'Grady, the Township Supervisor, approved the agreement with the Secretary of State's Office.

He said it was the first he's heard the complaints, and he said this was something that should be put to voters.

"We can put them on double secret probation," he said, "and we can clamp down on them and screw around with their hours, whatever we can do with them, right, we can make it hard on them, but just to throw the baby out with the bathwater, without taking it to the people, the voters, I'm just not for it."

He said 60,000 to 80,000 people use the office every year.

The trustees voted three to two to cancel the lease. The DMV has been given 90 days to move out.
