(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – A Chicago man accused of trying to steal more than $1,000 in merchandise from a department store over the weekend allegedly fought with store employees and a police officer when he was confronted.

Zachary Silagi, 30, on Saturday entered the Nordstrom at Oak Brook Center with Target bags and selected various items before going into a fitting room, DuPage County prosecutors said.

When he emerged, Silagi “had no visible merchandise on him, but the Target store bags he brought with him were now full with approximately $1,300 worth of clothing and men’s cosmetics,” authorities said in a news release.

When loss-prevention officers at the store tried to prevent Silagi from leaving without paying for the good, he allegedly fought with them. Silagi continued fighting when an Oak Brook police officer arrived, causing injuries to them, prosecutors said.

Silagi was taken into custody and charged with burglary, retail theft and resisting a police officer and causing injury, officials said. A judge on Sunday denied the state’s request to hold Silagi pending trial, and he’s next due in court on April 1, the state’s attorney’s office said.

“If you come here to steal and think you can evade arrest by resisting, you’re wrong,” Oak Brook Police Chief Brian Strockis said in a news release.
