(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Chicago’s first official heatwave of the year is expected to arrive just as summer kicks off this week, and Accuweather Meteorologist Carl Erickson said there’s a good chance this week’s heat will beat decades-old records.

Erickson said the forecast is projecting “dangerously hot conditions” for the Chicago area to start the week, with Monday's temperatures expected to be the hottest.

“The record high on Monday is 96, going back to 1957, but it’s not just the heat: [If] you combine the increase in humidity, it’ll feel more like it’s anywhere from 104 – 105 degrees during the afternoon,” he said.

To stay safe, he suggested limiting outdoor activities to early morning or late evening hours in order to avoid peak heating hours.

Erickson said it will also be important to stay hydrated.
