(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Thousands have signed an online petition demanding action after a student with a disability at an Elmhurst high school was physically bullied last week.
Video of the incident at York Community High School was posted to Twitter. It showed a group of students taunting and pushing another student in a boys’ bathroom.
The video pointed out that the boy being bullied has down syndrome.
An online petition with over 7,500 signatures since it’s been created called for more bathroom supervision and increased education on bullying and harassment, among other things.
It reads, in part: “This has occurred numerous times at our high school … hoping the administration recognizes the situation and finds a consequence as such. We are sick and tired of this mistreatment.”
In a letter to parents and students, York’s principal said the incident is under investigation and the appropriate consequences will be issued to those involved.
