(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- State officials and advocates for civil liberties are speaking out about a recent rash of threats against Chicago-area libraries.
In recent days, several suburban libraries have faced bomb threats, at a time when libraries in general have faced pushback over some material they stock and for drag queen story times. In downstate Davis this week, a similar threat prompted a library to temporarily close there.
Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias, the state’s librarian, has condemned the threats of violence and intimidation. And Ed Yohnka, spokesman for the American Civil Liberties Union in Illinois, says the threats could have a chilling effect.
The organization is urging people to visit their libraries, show support for librarians and attend library board meetings.
Illinois recently enacted a law designed to discourage book banning.
