CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Leaders in Tinley Park are citing the State of Illinois for not cleaning up an old building that poses significant risks to the village.
The property, which once housed the Tinley Park Mental Health Center, is owned by the state of Illinois, which closed the facility in 2012.
Ever since then, Tinley Park officials say the state hasn't been responsive toward their concerns about the 280-acre facility and the risk that it poses to the environment.
Village manager Dave Niemeyer said he's worried about the building catching on fire.
"It's a major eyesore. It's a major hazard and it's right in the middle of our town and it's been like this and getting worse since it's been closed almost 10 years ago," Niemeyer said.
Leaders are expecting to issue a written order outlining a plan for the state's cleanup of the building by next week.
