(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The shopping season may be over, but watch out for scammers sending fake messages about redeeming points.
November and December are prime spending months for most people, which means big credit card statements could be coming. Fraudsters know it’s easy for people to believe they have earned rewards, which leads to many phony texts, and emails.
Often, the subject line will say something like, “You have a new reward to redeem,” and it appears to be from a very well-known company. But beware and check closely because many of these are simply phishing emails designed to steal information or money.
The BBB advises:
-To always check the email address used to send the offer
-Never click on links in unexpected texts or emails
- Use the company's website to directly contact customer service to verify any offers
