(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Tax season is almost here – and it's a busy time for tax preparers and tax scammers.
Tax scams are popular, because they trick people into giving up their most valuable information or even sending money out of fear and urgency when they receive threatening calls, emails, and texts from IRS impersonators.
Here are some tips to keep you safe:
-Never share your banking or social security number over the phone.
-Know that phone calls, mail, and emails can appear as though they're coming from the IRS because scammers already know your name and can easily spoof caller ID.
-If you ever receive a threatening notice, contact the IRS or Social Security Administration directly.
