(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — You receive a package with merchandise you did not order with no return information. No, it's not your lucky day – you just were brushed off.

"Brushing" isn't a new scam, but it's sweeping parts of the nation again.

A package arrives with cheap, lightweight items like mystery seeds and ping pong balls, yet no information about who sent them.

Scammers do this to verify mailing addresses they can use in future scams, and they also post glowing product reviews to generate real sales.

You're not obligated to return merchandise that you did not order; however, you should report the incident to the delivery service, keep an eye on your credit card statements, and update your passwords.
