(WBBM NEWSRADIO) - It's the time of year when drivers need to be on the lookout for a particular animal.
Deer mating season has arrived, the time of the year when car accidents involving the animals become much more common. The Illinois Department of Natural Resources said last year over 40% of all deer related crashes were recorded between the months of October and December, with Cook, Madison and McHenry Counties leading the way in the number of incidents.
State leaders remind drivers to be alert for deer, especially at dawn and dusk and to slow down when spotting deer in case others are following.
IDOT and IDNR also suggest not swerving out of the way of the animals because it could result in drivers losing control or striking other vehicles.
