(WBBM NEWSRADIO) —Mayor Lori Lightfoot is defending what some critics say is her combative style as an outgrowth of her reforms in city government.

Her City Council floor leader resigned, and she recently accused two aldermen — one of them Latinx — of making racist and xenophobic statements.

The first-term mayor has developed a reputation as being combative, but she says that may be because she refuses to horse-trade with aldermen to get measures passed.

“I don’t buy votes. I never have and never will, and people aren’t used to that,” Lightfoot said Thursday.

The mayor doesn’t deny some aldermen and others are turned off by her style. But she said she wasn’t elected to win a popularity contest.

Eighth Ward Ald. Michelle Harris has assumed the floor leader role. Assistant floor leader is George Cardenas of the 12th Ward.
