(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – A Black trans activist is being remembered in Chicago with an honorary street sign in the city’s Andersonville community.
Ald. Leni Manaa-Hoppenworth of the 48th ward was one of a handful of elected leaders Friday who honored the activism work of Elise Malary by gathering along Catalpa Avenue.
Part of the street is being renamed Elise Mallary Way on what would have been her birthday and ahead of Trans Day of Visibility.
“This truly is one of the coolest neighborhoods in the world in Andersonville, but Elise always said it should be more than that,” Manaa-Hoppenworth said.
Malary, a founding member of Chicago Therapy Collective in Andersonville, died in 2022. The 31-year-old’s body was pulled from Lake Michigan days after she went missing.
