(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The trial of two former Illinois Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) workers, accused of failing to protect A.J. Freund before his death at the hands of his parents, begins Monday.

Ex-DCFS workers Carlos Acosta and Andrew Polovin were charged with endangering the life of a child and reckless conduct. Prosecutors said they ruled allegations of abuse were unfounded after Crystal Lake police reported a bruise on the hip of then-5-year-old A.J. in December 2018.

Five months later, A.J. was killed.

The boy’s mother is serving a prison term for murder. His father A.J. Freund Sr. made a plea deal for manslaughter, battery and concealment of a homicide — a deal he was partially granted because he cooperated with the investigation into DCFS.

The Northwest Herald reported the trial could take a week, as prosecutors argue the pair should have requested police reports from the December 2018 abuse allegations.
